How To Become A Sports Analyst?

Author: Gautam Varier

We previously elaborated on what exactly Sports Analytics is but what does it take to be the person implementing it? Considering the importance of analytics in sports today, Sports Analysts are very much in demand in this day and age. So, how do you go about becoming one at a time when competition is rising too? Let’s have a look.

Educational Qualification

There is no set educational qualification you need to become a sports analyst, but having a degree in computer science or statistics certainly would help. That doesn’t mean having a different educational background hurts your chances though. There are courses available now that help you form a strong base from which you can build your skills to reach the top.

Knowledge Of The Game

The biggest key to becoming a successful sports analyst is knowledge of the game. You can have all the tools in the world, but unless you know the game inside out, you’ll have a hard time making it. One doesn’t necessarily need to have played the game for it but needs to have a great understanding of it. That requires a deep dive into every aspect of the game and you need to put in the hard yards for it.

Showcase Your Capabilities

Perhaps a lesser-talked-about aspect of becoming a sports analyst, is that you simply have to put yourself out there. It means using social media as a tool to show the world what you are capable of. Use the skills that you’ve learned and combine that with your knowledge of the game to put quality analytical content for the world to see. You may not strike gold immediately but if your work is good, word will spread eventually and you will reap rewards.

Other keys to becoming one would be keeping in touch with the latest trends and gaining some experience at the lower levels of the spectrum. Also, attend conferences and seminars to build connections with industry professionals, as networking is extremely important in today’s world.
